Why do my dentures hurt my gums?

Dentures that hurt your gums need checking. Soreness can happen while getting used to a new set, but you should not assume ongoing pain is something you must put up with. Contact your clinician and explain where and when it hurts.

Is soreness normal with new dentures?

New dentures can take time to get used to, and sore spots may occur after fitting. Arrange the follow-up your clinician recommends and tell them about discomfort.

This does not explain every sore mouth. An online article cannot tell whether your discomfort comes from fit, irritation or another problem. Persistent pain deserves an assessment.

What should I tell the clinic?

  • When the soreness started.
  • Whether the denture is new or has been worn for a while.
  • Exactly where you feel discomfort.
  • Whether eating, speaking or putting it in makes it worse.
  • Whether it is moving, clicking or damaged.

Be specific if you can: “It rubs on the right when I eat” is more useful than trying to diagnose the cause yourself. Tell the team if the pain means you cannot wear it.

Should I adjust it myself?

Do not file the denture, bend parts or attempt a home repair. Ask your clinician what to do while waiting to be seen and whether to wear it before the appointment. Bring the denture, even if you have stopped using it.

If it has broken, use our repair enquiry route. If it is intact but uncomfortable, explain that clearly so the team knows what help you are asking for.

When should I see a dentist?

Arrange a dental assessment if your dentures are painful or your gums are very red or bleeding. A mouth ulcer that lasts longer than three weeks also needs checking by a dentist or GP.

Do not wait for a routine denture consultation if you have a mouth problem that needs dental attention. Tell the clinic about it when you make contact so you can be directed appropriately.

How can I prepare for a comfort review?

Write down the changes you have noticed, including anything that makes wearing your dentures difficult. Bring your current set and any information about recent fitting or repairs.

If you are in Swindon, contact the clinic or call 01793 569130 to explain the problem. The first step is understanding what is happening, then discussing appropriate care.

For a separate day-to-day routine, our existing cleaning guide covers looking after your dentures. Cleaning advice is not a substitute for checking persistent soreness.
