Everyday care

Should I take my dentures out at night?

Usually, yes. Remove your dentures before sleeping unless your dental clinician has given you different instructions. Taking them out gives your mouth a rest, and cleaning them before storage should be part of your evening routine.

Are there times when I should leave them in?

There can be specific instructions after treatment, including when immediate dentures are fitted following tooth removal. Follow the instructions given for your own procedure.

If you are unsure whether the advice was just for the first night or longer, contact the treating team. Do not turn a short-term instruction into a permanent habit without checking.

How should I store them?

Ask which storage method is suitable for your denture and its material. Follow the advice from your clinician and the instructions on any denture-cleaning product you use. We sell denture cleaning kits and our own Sparkle & Shine denture cleaner to our patients. Ask about them when you visit.

Use a dedicated container and keep it somewhere safe. Avoid leaving dentures in a tissue, where they can easily be mistaken for rubbish. Keep them out of reach of pets and children.

What if I feel uncomfortable taking them out?

Some people worry about a partner seeing them without dentures; others dislike the change in how their mouth feels. You can mention this at an appointment. It is a familiar, practical concern and worth discussing.

Explain what is making the routine difficult rather than quietly abandoning it. Your dental team can talk through the advice and help you plan a routine you understand.

What belongs in an evening routine?

Clean the dentures and look after your mouth and any remaining natural teeth as advised. Check that you know which products to use; advice for cleaning natural teeth is not automatically suitable for the denture itself.

Our cleaning guide explains the questions to ask about brushes, cleaners and storage. If your mouth is sore or the denture no longer fits, contact the clinic rather than treating the problem as a cleaning issue alone.
