Problems and repairs

What is a denture reline, and when might I need one?

A reline changes the fitting surface of an existing denture so it can fit your gums more closely. It may be considered when the fit has changed, but it is not suitable for every loose denture. An assessment comes first.

Why can the fit change?

Your mouth can change while the denture stays the same shape. That can affect the contact between its base and your gums. Changes after tooth removal are one example your clinician will consider.

Tell the team whether the looseness came on gradually or followed recent treatment. Also mention damage, previous relines and any change in how your teeth meet.

How is a reline different from a repair?

A repair addresses damage, such as a broken base or a tooth that has come away. A reline addresses the fitting surface. A denture can have more than one problem, so these terms are not interchangeable.

A reline also does not give you a new set of teeth. If the teeth are worn or there are other concerns with the denture, ask whether replacement would address more of the problem.

What should the assessment cover?

  • How the denture fits against your gums.
  • The condition of its base and teeth.
  • Your bite and the concerns you have when wearing it.
  • Whether the proposed work can address those concerns.

Ask why a reline is recommended in your case. You should understand what it is expected to improve and what it will leave unchanged.

Will I have to leave my dentures at the clinic?

Ask before work starts. The method, appointments and time without the denture depend on the treatment proposed. Let the team know if you rely on it for work, meals or caring responsibilities.

Request a quote and an explanation of follow-up before deciding. Contact Swindon Denture Clinic about a fit assessment, or read our repair-or-replace guide if you want to compare the questions to ask about each option.
