His qualifications: dental technology, then clinical care

Matthew’s training began with a Foundation Degree in Dental Technology from De Montfort University in 2009. In 2020, he completed the Diploma in Clinical Dental Technology from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Both qualifications are recorded in his General Dental Council register entry.

That progression matters. Dental technology focuses on making dental appliances. Clinical dental technology adds the skills needed to assess patients and provide denture care directly, within the profession’s scope.

The Royal College’s explanation of the diploma sets out what candidates must demonstrate: completed training, a satisfactory clinical logbook and an examination covering clinical dental technology. The assessment includes written papers and simulated clinical cases. Passing it allows the holder to apply for GDC registration as a Clinical Dental Technician.

GDC registration you can check

Matthew is registered with the General Dental Council under registration number 189460. His entry is under his full name, Matthew Allan Haines, and lists both Clinical Dental Technician and Dental Technician. His first registration date is 15 April 2010.

You do not have to take our word for his credentials. View Matthew’s registration and qualifications on the GDC register, where you can check his professional titles and current status.

Here in Swindon, Matthew sees patients in the clinic and makes their dentures in the laboratory. You can talk to him about the fit, shape and appearance, and he can carry that discussion into the making and fitting of your dentures. Read more about our laboratory and Matthew’s work at the clinic.

What his clinical qualification means for your care

A Clinical Dental Technician can plan, make and fit removable dental appliances. The GDC’s Scope of Practice guidance explains that patients with no natural teeth, roots or implants can receive denture care directly. If you still have natural teeth or implants, a dentist’s referral is needed to confirm you are suitable for the treatment.

Matthew’s interest in implant-retained work does not mean implant treatment can be provided without a dentist. At your consultation, the clinic will explain any dental assessment or referral needed for your circumstances.

What you can talk about at your appointment

In our Facebook introduction to Matthew, we describe where a consultation starts: how your dentures feel, what you would like to change and any questions about your options.

Bring your current dentures if you have them. Tell Matthew when they move, where they feel uncomfortable or what you dislike about their appearance. You can ask about the proposed work, the appointments involved, the costs and aftercare before deciding what to do next.
