Plan the design

DENTURE ADVICE FROM SWINDON
A metal framework is one option for a partial denture. Here’s what to ask about the design, the fit and how it compares with acrylic.
You may hear both “chrome cobalt” and “cobalt chrome”. They refer to the cobalt–chromium alloy used to make the metal framework of a removable partial denture. The denture also has artificial teeth and gum-coloured acrylic where needed.
The frame is designed around the teeth you still have. Its shape, supports and clasps are part of the overall plan, rather than a standard plate chosen from a shelf.
Ask Matthew whether this is an option for your case. Availability and suitability need to be confirmed at an assessment.
| Consideration | Chrome cobalt | Acrylic |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Metal framework with teeth and acrylic sections. | Plastic base with artificial teeth. |
| Shape and feel | A rigid framework may allow a slimmer design; the overall fit still matters. | Thickness and coverage depend on the particular design. |
| Future changes | Ask what happens if a supporting tooth is lost or a repair is needed. | Ask whether an addition or adjustment is practical for the planned denture. |
| Cost | Compare a written quote for your treatment, including any dental work and follow-up. | |
Comfort comes from an appropriate design and careful fitting. Choosing metal does not guarantee a comfortable denture.
Chrome cobalt is usually discussed when some natural teeth remain. Their condition, the pattern of missing teeth and the way your teeth meet need assessment.
Tell your clinician about any known material allergies and your previous experience of dentures. Ask where any clasps would sit and what would be visible. You can also ask to see an example before deciding.
A dentist’s assessment and prescription are needed for patients with natural teeth. Read about the clinical dental technician’s role.

Framework and tooth-position checks may be part of the appointments. Your clinician will explain the stages for your denture, including fitting and follow-up.
Some clasps may be visible, depending on their position. Ask your clinician to show you what the proposed design would look like.
No denture should be treated as unbreakable. If it is damaged, avoid bending or repairing it yourself. Ask the clinic to check it.
Use advice specific to your denture and its metal components. Check that any cleaning product is suitable for the material. We sell denture cleaning kits and our own Sparkle & Shine denture cleaner to our patients. Ask which products are suitable for your denture and its metal components.
We do not publish a separate fixed price for chrome cobalt dentures. Ask for a quote based on your assessment.
